Q&A
Question: Are the neighbor islands eligible for this rebate from Hawaiian Electric Company?
Answer: No, the rebates are only being offered to residential customers on Oahu as HECO services the island of Oahu.
Question: Why can't the sale receipt be dated before February 13, 2007?
Answer: The Public Utilities Commission granted HECO permission to start work on this new program effective February 13, 2007. No rebate can be paid prior to this date.
Question: Can I still apply if the sales receipt is dated after February 13, 2007 but one year has passed and I did not mail in my application?
Answer: HECO has a six month limit on all rebate applications; you would no longer qualify for the rebate.
Question: What if my appliance does not appear on the ENERGY STAR website?
Answer: In order to qualify for the HECO rebate, your appliance model number must appear on the energystar.gov website and the number must match exactly. The ENERGY STAR website is updated frequently and is HECO’s primary source to validate if your appliance qualifies.
Question: What if my appliance model number is close to the one on the ENERGY STAR website, but the last digit is different?
Answer: Your appliance model number must match exactly what is listed on the energystar.gov website in order to qualify for the HECO rebate.
Question: If I live in a condo and I do not have a Hawaiian Electric account number can I still collect the rebate?
Answer: Yes, but we will need the Name of the Property listed on the HECO statement to process your application and the address. For example: "AOAO Shores of Kau Kau, 1616 Third Road, Honolulu, HI 969XX."
Question: Does my sales receipt need to show the brand and model number?
Answer: Yes, your sales receipt should show the appliance brand and model number. If there is no information, please include a photo copy of the appliance owner's manual cover page showing the brand and model number. The sales receipt must show at least the stores product’s identification code, so we can call the store to verify the brand and model to match the photo copy of the owner manual.
Question: Why do I need to include the original receipt?
Answer: We require the original sales receipt because many times the photo copy of a very lightly printed original receipt is hard to read. Also, by turning in your original receipt, this reduces the possibility of a receipt being used multiple times. If you would like your original receipt mailed back to you, please include a self-addressed and stamped envelope. Your receipt will be mailed back to you shortly after we receive your application.
Question: If I buy four ceiling fans, can I earn four rebates?
Answer: Yes.
Question: If I purchased a ceiling fan and a window air conditioner can I earn a rebate for each item?
Answer: Yes, but you need to use two different rebate applications forms. One application for the ceiling fan and one application for the window air conditioner.
Question: If I purchased two refrigerators or dish washers or clothes washers can I earn two rebates?
Answer: That depends; we will call you to find out why one home needs so many of these items, as this program is for residential use only. In situations like this we may send an inspector to verify the application.
Question: Are there limits to the amount of items one resident address (HECO account number) can apply for the rebates?
Answer: Yes. These are HECO guidelines: 5 - Ceiling Fans. 1 - Clothes Washer 1 - Refrigerator 1 - Dish Washer 5 - Window Air Conditioners If you apply for more items an inspection may be necessary to confirm the application.
Question: How long after HECO receives our application can we expect to receive our rebate?
Answer: HECO will process your completed application in 6-8 weeks from the date we receive it. If an application has any missing information the processing time will be much longer.
Question: I have a window room air conditioner and would like to have it professionally serviced. Will I qualify for the HECO service rebate?
Answer: No, the rebate for central air-conditioning service only applies to homes with central air conditioning. Window and Split Systems are not covered by this program.
Question: What qualifies as central air conditioning?
Answer: A central air conditioning is a system which uses ducts to distribute cooled and/or dehumidified air to more than one room or uses pipes to distribute chilled water to a heat exchanger in more than one room, and which is not plugged into an electrical convenience outlet.
